South Indian bridal makeup in Bangalore

Many Bangalore weddings are South Indian ceremonies, and the bridal look is built around them. Think silk sarees, temple jewellery, a long braid with jasmine, and makeup that looks fresh at a dawn muhurtham and still holds up at an evening reception. Each community has its own style: a Kannadiga, Tamil, Telugu, Malayali or Konkani bride may want quite different looks. When you look at an artist's work, find brides from your own tradition.

Bangalore also has many North Indian, Christian and mixed weddings. If you want a lehenga look for the sangeet and a saree look for the wedding, choose an artist who does both well.

The early start

A muhurtham before sunrise means your makeup may start in the middle of the night. Ask your artist how long the full bridal look takes, including hair and draping, and work backwards from the ceremony time. Check that they can reach your home or venue at that hour, and whether there's an extra charge for early starts.

If you have a reception the same evening, plan for a second look or a touch-up session. Some artists stay through the day. Others come back.

HD, airbrush and other terms

  • HD makeup: made to look smooth on camera, applied by hand.
  • Airbrush: foundation sprayed in thin, even layers.
  • Draping: setting your saree or dupatta so it stays in place all day.
  • Hair: braids, buns and flower work, often by a separate hair stylist on the team.
  • Party makeup: lighter looks for other functions or for family and friends.

How to choose your artist

  • Look at photos and videos of real brides, in daylight and indoor light.
  • Find past work on skin tones and features similar to yours.
  • Book a trial, ideally in the same kind of light as your ceremony.
  • Ask if the artist will do your look personally, or a team member.
  • Choose someone who listens. You should feel calm in their chair.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How long does the bridal look take, and what time will you arrive?
  • Do you do traditional braids and flower work, or should we book a separate hair stylist?
  • Is saree draping included?
  • Do you travel to resorts outside the city? What's the travel charge?
  • Is the trial paid?
  • Can your team do makeup for the family? How many people can you cover before the ceremony?
  • What products do you use? I have sensitive skin.

Artists and studios are spread across the city, including Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Koramangala, Indiranagar, Whitefield, Hebbal and Malleshwaram. Most travel to you. For a dawn ceremony, an artist close to where you're getting ready saves a lot of stress. Use the Area filter, and check whether the card says they travel to venues. If you're getting ready at a resort near Devanahalli or on Kanakapura Road, ask whether the artist will stay there the night before. It costs a little more, but it removes the risk of a long drive in the dark.

When to book

Popular muhurtham dates fill up fast for the best-known artists. Book once your date and ceremony time are fixed, then plan your trial a few weeks before the wedding.

What affects the cost

  • The artist: senior artists cost more than their team members.
  • Number of looks: wedding only, or reception, mehndi and sangeet too.
  • Type of makeup: HD or airbrush bridal looks usually cost more than party makeup.
  • Hair and draping: sometimes included, sometimes charged separately.
  • Timing and travel: very early starts and venues outside the city may cost more.

Where an artist publishes a starting price, it shows on the card.
