What a kalyana mandapam in Chennai offers
A kalyana mandapam is a hall made for one job: a traditional South Indian wedding. Most have the same parts:
- The main hall with a raised stage for the rituals, and seats facing it.
- A dining hall, often on another floor, where guests eat in sittings.
- A kitchen used by the mandapam's caterer or the family's own cook.
- Rooms for the bride's and groom's families to stay, rest and dress.
- Space at the entrance for welcoming guests and the nadaswaram players.
Newer mandapams add air-conditioning, lifts, car parking and a separate reception area. Older ones may be simpler but well located.
How booking usually works
Many families book a mandapam from the evening before the wedding. That evening might hold the reception or the nichayathartham, with dinner. The families sleep at the hall, rise early for the muhurtham, and the wedding ends with lunch. Ask exactly when you can enter and when you must hand back the keys.
Ask about the kitchen too. Some mandapams have a fixed caterer. Others let you bring your own cook, and charge for gas, water or cleaning. Many are vegetarian only.
AC or non-AC?
Chennai is warm for most of the year, and a packed hall gets hot fast. Many mandapams offer AC and non-AC prices, sometimes for the main hall and the dining hall separately. If you're inviting elderly relatives, or your date falls in the hotter months, AC is worth asking about. Check that the power backup covers the air-conditioning, not only the lights.
Kalyana mandapams by area
- Tambaram side (Madambakkam, Chromepet, Chitlapakkam, Urapakkam, Peria Kovilambakkam): a strong cluster of mandapams in the southern suburbs.
- Porur and the west (Kolappakkam, Iyyappanthangal, Thiruverkadu, Virugambakkam): halls close to the Poonamallee and Mount roads.
- North and north-west (Shenoy Nagar, Purasaiwakkam, Ambattur, Moolakadai, Thiruvottiyur): halls in older and growing neighbourhoods.
- South (Velachery, Madipakkam): halls close to the IT corridor.
- OMR and ECR (Kelambakkam, Injambakkam): newer halls further south.
Choosing between mandapams
Start with your guest count and the dining hall size. If the dining hall seats far fewer than your guests, lunch will run in many sittings, and the last guests may wait a long time. Visit during another wedding if the hall allows it, and watch how the staff handle the crowd.
Then check the rooms. How many are there, and do they have attached bathrooms? Families may spend a night and a morning here, so this matters.
Questions to ask the mandapam
- From what time to what time is our booking?
- Is there an in-house caterer, or can we bring our own cook?
- Is the kitchen vegetarian only?
- How many guests does the dining hall seat in one sitting?
- How many rooms are there, and are they AC?
- Is there a lift to the dining hall?
- Is the generator big enough for the AC?
- What's the advance, and what happens if the muhurtham date changes?
When to book
Your muhurtham date decides everything. Book the mandapam as soon as the family fixes it. Popular dates before and after the months of Aadi and Margazhi go first, and good mandapams in busy areas can be booked well in advance. For dates between October and December, the rainy season, ask about flooding on the roads nearby.
What affects the cost
- Hours: a day, or from the evening before through lunch.
- AC or non-AC: for the hall and the dining area.
- Size: the main hall and dining hall capacity.
- Catering: in-house rates per leaf or plate, or fees if you bring a cook.
- Date: popular muhurtham dates and weekends.
- Extras: decor, sound, rooms, generator use and cleaning.

Kalyana mandapams in Chennai: questions
It depends on the hall's size, AC or non-AC, the hours you book and catering. Where a mandapam lists a starting price, it shows on the card. Ask for a written quote with taxes.
Check the three parts that matter: the main hall's size, how many the dining hall seats per sitting, and the rooms for the families. Ask whether you can bring your own cook, whether the power backup covers the AC, and the exact hours included. Visit at muhurtham time to feel the light and the heat.
Some mandapams allow it, usually with a charge for the kitchen, gas or cleaning. Others only use their own caterer.
Most do. Ask how many, whether they're AC, and whether they're included in the rent.
In Chennai the words often mean the same thing. A mandapam is built for traditional weddings, with a stage, dining hall and family rooms. "Marriage hall" can also cover banquet halls and hotel halls.
Both are used. "Mandapam" is the common Tamil form in Chennai; "mantapa" is more common in Karnataka.
As soon as your family fixes the muhurtham date. Popular dates go first.
