How to write your wedding invitation message

3 steps: add details, choose style, send

  1. Add your details. Names, date and venue, plus who is hosting if you like.

  2. Choose the style. Pick who you're inviting, how you're sending it and the tone. Add your faith for a traditional opening line, or pick "Several functions" to list every function in one message.

  3. Copy and send. Heart your favourites, then copy them or send them on WhatsApp or email. They stay saved on this device for 30 days.

Wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp

Short invites with date, venue and map link

Keep WhatsApp invites short: names, date, time, venue and a map link. Here are five you can copy.

  1. Riya and Arjun are getting married! Join us on Saturday, 12 December, 7 pm, at The Leela Palace, Udaipur. Map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/abc

  2. Save your evening for us. Our wedding is on 12 December at 7 pm, The Leela Palace, Udaipur. We can't wait to celebrate with you. Riya & Arjun

  3. With love and blessings, we invite you to our wedding on 12 December, 7 pm, at The Leela Palace, Udaipur. Please reply by 15 November. Riya & Arjun

  4. It's official 💍 Riya and Arjun, Saturday 12 December, The Leela Palace, Udaipur. Dinner and dancing from 7 pm. Will you be there?

  5. A quick reminder: our wedding is tomorrow at 7 pm, The Leela Palace, Udaipur. See you there! Riya & Arjun

WhatsApp invitation format: one detail per line

On WhatsApp, guests read on a small screen, so put each detail on its own line. Pick "WhatsApp or text" in the generator and the first message is laid out like this.

  • Length. Aim for a message that fits on one phone screen without scrolling: about five to eight short lines. Put the names first, then the date, time and venue. If you need more (travel, stay, a different dress code for each function), send the invite first and the details in a second message.
  • Emojis. Use them as labels, not as decoration: 📅 for the date, 🕖 for the time, 📍 for the venue. Guests can then find a detail at a glance. One or two for feeling (💍 🎉) is plenty. For elders, senior colleagues and formal family groups, write "Date:", "Time:" and "Venue:" instead. Emojis can look slightly different on each phone, so never let an emoji replace a word.
  • Bold. Put stars around your names (*Riya & Arjun*) and WhatsApp shows them in bold. Bold one thing only, or nothing stands out.
  • Links. Paste a Google Maps link on its own line (in Maps: Share → Copy link). WhatsApp usually shows a preview for one link, so put the map first if you share more than one.
  • Card images. If you send a printed card as a photo, paste the text as its caption, so guests can copy the address and tap the map.
  • Many guests. A WhatsApp broadcast list sends one message to many people as separate chats, but it only reaches people who have saved your number. Elders still like a personal message.

Wedding invitation quotes

Start your card or message with a short line. These are free to use.

  • Love brought us together. Family and friends make it complete.

  • Some moments are too happy to celebrate alone.

Formal wedding invitation wording

Host lines for every family, plus dates and names

Formal wedding invitation wording starts with the host line: who is inviting the guests. Then come the couple's names, the date and time written out, and the venue. Find your situation below, and swap the words in [brackets] for your details.

Who is hostingHost line

Both families (by surname)The [Surname] and [Surname] families request the pleasure of your company at the wedding of [Name] and [Name].
The couple, with their familiesTogether with their families, [Full name] and [Full name] request the pleasure of your company at their wedding.
The couple[Full name] and [Full name] request the pleasure of your company at their wedding.
Divorced parents[Mother's full name] and [Father's full name] request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their daughter [Name] to [Full name]. (Each parent on their own line. A remarried parent can be listed with their spouse: [Mother's full name] and [Stepfather's full name].)
A parent who has passed away[Mother's full name] requests the pleasure of your company at the marriage of her daughter [Name], daughter of the late [Father's full name], to [Full name]. (Many Indian cards instead open with "With the blessings of the late [Name]".)
Second marriageTogether with their children, [Full name] and [Full name] invite you to celebrate their marriage. (Or simply the couple's line above. A second wedding is usually hosted by the couple.)
Reception only (after a private ceremony or a wedding abroad)[Name] and [Name] were married in a private ceremony on [Date]. Please join us for a reception in their honour on [Date] at [Venue].

Honour or pleasure?

"Request the honour of your presence" is used for ceremonies in a place of worship. "Request the pleasure of your company" is used everywhere else.

Whose name goes first?

On a card from one family, that family's child comes first, with their first name only, because the surname is already in the host line. The other partner gets their full name. When both families or the couple are hosting, either order works. Many Indian families print two versions of the card, one from each side, each with their own child's name first. Whatever you choose, keep the same order everywhere: card, WhatsApp, welcome board.

Should you spell out the date?

On a formal printed card, yes. Write the day, date, year and time in words: "Saturday, the twelfth of December, two thousand twenty-six, at seven o'clock in the evening". Some cards write "two thousand and twenty-six"; both are correct, so just stay consistent. Leave out "pm" and use "in the morning", "in the afternoon" or "in the evening". On WhatsApp and email, numbers are easier to read: "Saturday, 12 December 2026, 7 pm". In the generator, pick "Printed card" and turn on "Write the date and time in words".

From the generator

  1. Mr and Mrs Rajesh Sharma request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Riya to Arjun Mehta, son of Mr and Mrs Vikram Mehta, on Saturday, the twelfth of December, two thousand twenty-six, at seven o'clock in the evening, The Leela Palace, Udaipur.

  2. Mr and Mrs Rajesh Sharma and Mr and Mrs Vikram Mehta request the pleasure of your company at the marriage of their children, Riya and Arjun, on Saturday, 12 December 2026, at 7 pm, The Leela Palace, Udaipur.

6 tips for wedding invitation messages

When to send, what to include…

  1. Send at the right time. Save the dates 6 to 8 months before, invitations 6 to 8 weeks before, and a reminder 1 or 2 days before.

  2. Keep WhatsApp short. One detail per line, a map link, and no more than one screen.

  3. Write the date out on cards. "Saturday, 12 December 2026" reads better than 12/12/26 and can't be misread abroad.

  4. Always add an RSVP date. It helps with catering and seating.

  5. Name the hosts. It tells guests who is inviting them, which matters to elders.

  6. Same guests for every function? Send one message with all the timings. If the guest lists differ, send one message per function.
