Marriage halls in Chennai: what to expect

A Chennai wedding usually needs a hall that can do three things in one place: host the muhurtham on a stage, feed every guest in a dining hall, and give both families rooms to rest and dress. That is why "marriage hall" means so much here. Many families book the hall from the evening before, for the reception or nichayathartham, through to the end of the wedding lunch the next day.

Most marriage halls have their own kitchen. Some insist on their own caterer, while others let you bring a cook your family trusts. Many traditional halls serve vegetarian food only, so check before you plan the menu.

Kalyana mandapams, banquet halls, hotels and beach venues

  • Kalyana mandapams: halls built for weddings, with a stage, a dining hall, a kitchen and family rooms. They are the most common choice for the muhurtham. See the separate list of kalyana mandapams in Chennai.
  • Banquet halls: modern halls, often air-conditioned, popular for receptions and for weddings that want a more contemporary look.
  • Hotels: ballrooms and lawns in Guindy, T Nagar, Alwarpet, Egmore and along OMR, good for receptions and guests from out of town.
  • Beach resorts and lawns on ECR: venues from Akkarai and Muttukadu down to Mahabalipuram for receptions, sangeets and beach-style weddings.
  • Small party halls: for engagements, valaikaappu and smaller family functions.

Banquet halls in Chennai for receptions

Many couples hold the muhurtham at a mandapam and the reception at a banquet hall or hotel. A reception needs different things: a big stage for photos, good lighting, sound for music, a buffet that can serve a crowd, and enough parking for the evening rush. If you want both events in one place, ask whether the hall can turn the stage around overnight, and who does the work.

Wedding venues in Chennai by area

General patterns only, so always check the venue itself.

  • T Nagar, Mylapore, Alwarpet and Kilpauk: central halls and hotels in older neighbourhoods.
  • Vadapalani, Virugambakkam, Porur and Guindy: halls and hotels in the west and centre.
  • Tambaram, Chromepet, Madambakkam and Pallavaram: many mandapams in the southern suburbs.
  • Avadi, Ambattur and Poonamallee: larger halls in the west and north-west.
  • OMR and ECR: hotels, resorts and beach venues to the south.

Questions to ask the hall

  • Is our muhurtham date free, and from what time can we use the hall the day before?
  • Is the kitchen vegetarian only? Can we bring our own caterer or cook?
  • How many people can the dining hall seat in one sitting?
  • How many rooms are there for the families, and are they air-conditioned?
  • Is there a lift to the dining hall, and parking for guests?
  • Is there full power backup?
  • What's the advance, and what happens if the date changes?

When to book

Families pick wedding dates from the Tamil calendar, and many avoid the months of Aadi and Margazhi. That pushes demand onto the auspicious dates either side, and the best halls go early. Book the hall as soon as the family fixes the muhurtham. If your date falls between October and December, when the northeast monsoon brings Tamil Nadu nearly half its yearly rain, check how the roads near the hall cope with heavy rain.

What affects the cost

  • Type of venue: mandapams, banquet halls, hotels and beach resorts price very differently.
  • Hours: one day, or from the evening before through to lunch.
  • Air-conditioning: AC halls usually cost more.
  • Catering: per-leaf or per-plate meals, number of items, and whether outside caterers pay a fee.
  • Date: popular muhurtham dates and weekends.
  • Extras: decor, nadaswaram and sound, rooms, generator use.
