Wedding venues in Udaipur: the City of Lakes

Udaipur is built around a chain of lakes, with old palaces on the water and the Aravalli hills behind. That setting is why so many couples choose it. The venues fall into three groups:

  • Palaces and heritage hotels: on or near Lake Pichola and the old city, with courtyards, terraces and lake views. Some stand on islands and are reached by boat.
  • Resorts: on the hills and around the city's edges, with large lawns and more rooms.
  • Hotels: in the city, often near the lakes, good for guest rooms and smaller functions.

A few palace properties sit outside Udaipur, in villages such as Delwara and Sisarma, for couples who want quiet and space.

Udaipur is also a busy tourist city. Popular lakeside spots fill with visitors during the day, so many couples hold photo sessions early in the morning and keep the main functions inside the venue.

Palace wedding or resort wedding?

A palace wedding in Udaipur gives you history and views that no decorator can build. The trade-offs are space and rules. Heritage buildings often have fewer rooms, tighter spaces and strict house rules on music, fireworks, the number of vendors and what can be fixed to old walls. Island venues add boat transfers for every guest and vendor, which needs careful timing.

A resort is usually easier to run. Lawns are bigger, rooms are more numerous, and access is by road. You lose some of the old-city magic, but many resorts have lake or hill views of their own.

Many couples mix both: a resort for the stay and most functions, and one palace evening for the wedding or reception.

Best season for an Udaipur wedding

The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the main season. Days are pleasant and evenings outdoors are comfortable, though winter nights can get cold. Summer is very hot, and outdoor daytime functions are hard on guests. The monsoon fills the lakes and turns the hills green, which some couples love, but rain can disrupt open-air plans. Ask each venue what indoor backup it has.

How many days to plan

Most Udaipur weddings run two or three days. A common plan is a welcome dinner and mehendi on day one, haldi and sangeet on day two, and the wedding and reception on day three. A shorter plan saves money on rooms; a longer one gives guests time to see the city.

Getting there

Udaipur has its own airport, Maharana Pratap Airport at Dabok, east of the city, and a railway station. Many guests also drive in from nearby cities in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Plan pick-ups from the airport and station, and remember that the old city's lanes are narrow: buses may need to stop outside, with smaller cars or walks for the last stretch.

Where guests will stay

Rooms are often the hardest part. A palace may hold your close family but not every guest. Count rooms early, and ask the venue whether you must book all of them, or for a minimum number of nights. If you need more rooms, pick a second hotel close by and plan shuttles between them. Tell guests clearly where they're staying, how they'll get to each function, and what to wear.

Questions to ask the venue

  • How many rooms do you have, and must we book them all?
  • What's the minimum stay or spend for our dates?
  • What are the rules on music timings, fireworks and the baraat?
  • Can we bring our own decorator, caterer and photographer?
  • For island or lakeside venues: how do boat transfers work, and what if the weather turns?
  • Is there an indoor backup for rain or cold nights?
  • What's the advance, and what are the cancellation terms?

Wedding venues in Udaipur: questions

It depends on the venue, the season, the number of rooms and days, and the guest count. Heritage hotels often require a room block or minimum spend. Ask each venue for a full quote with taxes.
