Destination wedding in Jim Corbett: what it's like

A Corbett wedding trades palaces and beaches for sal forest, the Kosi river and the sound of birds in the morning. All the venues on this list are resorts, most of them around Ramnagar and along the road through Dhikuli, near the edge of Corbett Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand. They offer lawns for the functions, rooms for guests and kitchens that can feed a crowd.

It suits couples who want a relaxed weekend, and families in Delhi NCR and western Uttar Pradesh who'd rather drive than fly.

Rules near the tiger reserve

The resorts sit close to a protected forest, and that shapes the party. Expect stricter rules on loud music, fireworks and bright lights at night than at a city venue. India's noise rules already ban loudspeakers outdoors from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and resorts near the reserve may be stricter still. Plan the sangeet or after-party in an indoor hall, and ask each resort for its rules in writing before you book.

The baraat may also look different here: some resorts allow a band on their own grounds but not on the main road.

Best season for a Corbett wedding

Winter, from about November to February, is the most popular time. Days are bright and pleasant, but nights and early mornings are cold, so plan heaters, bonfires (where allowed) and warm indoor spaces. March and April are warmer and still dry. The monsoon brings heavy rain, swollen rivers and closed park zones, so it's the hardest time for an outdoor wedding.

Safaris are a big draw for guests. Most tourism zones close during the monsoon and reopen in autumn; check the official Corbett booking site for the dates and book permits well ahead, as they sell out.

Getting there

Most guests come by road from Delhi NCR, or by train to Ramnagar station, which is close to most resorts. The nearest airport is at Pantnagar. Plan buses or cars from Delhi and from the station, and time departures so guests don't drive unlit roads late at night.

How many days, and where guests stay

Two days is the usual plan: arrive for a welcome lunch, mehendi and sangeet on day one, and the wedding and reception on day two, with a safari for those who want it. Some families add a third day to rest.

Resorts here are often smaller than city hotels, so count rooms early. If one resort can't hold everyone, pick two or three close together on the same stretch of road and run shuttles. Share a simple guest guide with timings, the dress code for cold evenings, and safari details.

Bringing vendors in

Many decorators, photographers and makeup artists for Corbett weddings come from Delhi NCR or nearby cities. That adds travel and stay to every quote, and set-up takes longer than in the city. Ask each resort which outside vendors it allows, where vendor teams can stay, and how early they can start setting up. A planner who has worked in Corbett before can save a lot of trouble here. Agree early on who brings the generator, lights and heaters.

Questions to ask the resort

  • How many rooms do you have, and what's the minimum booking for a wedding?
  • What are your rules on music, fireworks and lights at night?
  • Is there an indoor hall for the evening functions and a rain backup?
  • Can we bring our own decorator, caterer and photographer?
  • Do you arrange heaters and bonfires for winter evenings?
  • Can you help guests book safaris?
  • What's the advance, and what are the cancellation terms?
